Perfect Love Casts Out Fear Part 5

3 Oct

There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and he who fears is not perfected in love.

1 John 4:18

I started studying this verse because I was dealing with some fears—and for the first time I took a good long look at it in context—and found some amazing truths for my life that I hope will we helpful for yours as well.

The word “fear” here is the antonym of the word “confidence” in verse 17.  So there IS confidence in love, but no fear.  It’s a fact.  God isn’t afraid to make unequivocal statements, is He?  If I were saying it, I would say, “You don’t find a lot of fear in love,” but not “There is no fear in love.”  When I’ve read this before, I’ve felt this burden of becoming more loving in order to be able to stop fearing—but, happily, this is not what this verse is saying.

We’ll get there soon in this study, but for now just meditate on the confidence that we can have in God’s love. He loves, He cares, and He’s in control.
