Do Not Fear; God is Here

We are to have godly optimism. (Johnny Jump-ups)

The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?  Psalm 118:6

God is on our side.  The Hebrew word for afraid is yare.  Here we see it in its negative sense of “the emotional and intellectual anticipation of harm, what one feels may go wrong.”  This kind of fear is all about the what ifs, could haves, mights, and maybes of life.  How much time do we waste on what might possibly go wrong?  We are to have a godly optimism.

After all, the God who is all-powerful, all-knowing, and everywhere-present is with us.  We cannot be separated from His love (Romans 8:38-39)  The question in verse six is not implying that man can’t do anything to us, but that God is sovereign over our situations.  Nothing happens to us that He does not use as part of His plan and for our good and the good of His people.  He’s not just sovereign, but full of love, mercy, faithfulness, etc. towards us in the situation at hand.  We can trust Him.
