Cry out to Jesus

12 Aug

In my anguish I cried to the LORD, and he answered by setting me free. Psalm 118:5

Anguish means distress, pain, anxiety and tension.  The literal meaning is a tight place.    This feeling can be infused with hope or grey with hopelessness.  Either way, the author is telling us that he cried out to the Lord and that the Lord responded by setting him free.  The literal meaning is set into a large spacious place free from oppression and enemies.  One of the enemy’s tactics is to get us in a tight place where we feel trapped.  While we’re there he lies to us and tells us we can’t escape.  We feel as if we have no way to turn—but we do.  We can turn to God.  Always.

Somehow this makes me think of commercials for anti-histamines.  First we see the red-nosed, sneezing allergy sufferer in her home, and after taking the advertised medicine, we see her twirling happily in a flower-studded meadow.  God frees us from all types of captivity.
