More About God’s Peace

5 Jul

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Phil. 4:7

Our heart–kardia–is the seat of our desires, our feelings, our affections, our passions, and our impulses.  Our mind–nóêma–includes the ideas of thoughts, concepts, and understandings as opposed to guile or delusions.  Do you get it?  God keeps us from being beguiled or deluded.  How?  By guarding our hearts and minds.  guard is a military term.  It means to place a sentinel.  We give our worries to God and He places a sentinel named Peace at the door to our hearts and our minds.  Great exchange, eh?

The sentinel who guards our hearts and minds is a Very Important Person.  Jesus guards us.  “For He Himself [Jesus] is our peace.” (Ephesians 2:14a)  The all-powerful, all-knowing, everywhere-present God guards our hearts and minds.  Isn’t that amazing?  All we have to do is stop trying to hide our worries and give them to God.  Repeatedly.  And.  Continuously.
